Where did my desire to make food to share with others come from?
Everyone has a personal relationship to food. From the beginning of life food connects to our first caregivers and follows us through our culture and memories. My own story is not different from so many other people, though I consider myself to be very fortunate in that my mother carried forth a tradition from her family where good wholesome food was a central priority to family life.
Growing up when I did, it would have been fairly easy for me to have let this tradition slip by the wayside. I am one of four boys in our family, and at that time there was little expectation that boys would need to learn how to cook or prepare food. Nevertheless, the kitchen in our home was a welcoming place, and I was drawn to spend time there watching and sometimes helping my mother making meals or cookies or other special treats.
When I went away to college I got my first taste of institutional food and really learned to appreciate how fortunate I was having grown up in a home where every meal was tasty, nutritious, and made from scratch with fresh ingredients. While at college, my mother was kind enough to provide me with a few recipes so that I could occasionally make a meal or a treat for myself. It wasn't long before my friends started requesting that I make different things to share. By the time I graduated, I was pretty well able to make enough of a variety of things to feed myself and explore making more and more different things.
